New figures show that an increasing number of small businesses are improving their websites with techniques such as search engine copywriting.
According to online communications company Amplify, 43 per cent of small firms are investing in online marketing as the recession continues.
It also found that many companies were starting to see the value of social media channels as part of their marketing strategy such as Twitter and Facebook.
Speaking about the survey, Stephen Alambritis from the Federation of Small Businesses said: “It is hugely reassuring to learn that more small firms are investing in improving their website.
"As the home market struggles to recover, it is important that businesses appeal to international patronage."
He added: "The global economy has meant the death of distance in commercial transactions and what better way to take advantage of this phenomenon than to invest in online collaboration."
