New figures have revealed that search engine Bing could be a worthy challenger to Google after managing to capture a near-11 per cent share of the US market in little more than three months.
According to research by Nielsen, Bing is now the now the fastest-growing online search engine in North America.
Formerly known as Window Live Search, Bing was unveiled in May 2009 by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and went fully live a month later. In July, Microsoft and Yahoo! announced a ten-year deal to replace the Yahoo! search engine with Bing.
Mr Ballmer said at the time: "Through this agreement with Yahoo!, we will create more innovation in search, better value for advertisers, and real consumer choice in a market currently dominated by a single company." He added: "I believe it establishes the foundation for a new era of internet innovation and development".
Meanwhile, a company insider has revealed plans to include visual options on Bing's homepage after a survey revealed imaging helps consumers process results 20 per cent quicker than those with text alone.
Todd Schwartz claimed that visitors would find "an amazing new visual search experience", which allows people to do "one-click refinements" that are "specifically relevant to the type of results you are browsing through".
